how i learned to trust my gut on renovation costs

When we decided to renovate our old house, I was overwhelmed by the task of estimating costs. We’d been quoted wildly different prices by contractors, and I was starting to lose my mind trying to make sense of it all.

I started doing some research online and stumbled upon escali, a cost estimation tool that some builders were raving about. I was skeptical at first, but after reading some reviews and talking to a few people who’d used it, I decided to give it a try.

The more I used escali, the more I realized that my initial hesitation was rooted in a deeper issue: I didn’t trust my own instincts about what the renovation should cost. I’d been relying too heavily on the contractors’ quotes, which were often based on their own agendas rather than our actual needs.

breaking down the numbers

With escali, I was able to break down the costs into smaller, more manageable chunks. I started to see that some of the contractors’ quotes were padded with unnecessary expenses, while others were omitting crucial elements that would end up costing us more down the line.

As I worked through the estimation process, I began to feel more confident in my own judgment. I realized that I’d been letting the contractors’ numbers dictate our budget, rather than the other way around.

a newfound sense of control

Using escali gave me a sense of control over the renovation process that I’d been lacking. I was no longer at the mercy of the contractors’ quotes, and I could make informed decisions about where to allocate our budget.

I remember one particularly contentious discussion with a contractor who was insisting that we needed to spend a certain amount on a particular element. I was able to pull out the escali estimate and show him that it was actually a relatively minor expense. He backed down, and we ended up saving a significant amount of money.

the value of a clear estimate

In the end, using escali helped us stay on budget and avoid some costly surprises. More importantly, it gave me the confidence to trust my own instincts about what the renovation should cost. I learned that with the right tools and a clear understanding of the numbers, I can make informed decisions that benefit our business and our bottom line.

Now, when friends and family ask for renovation advice, I tell them to start with a solid estimate – and to trust their gut when the numbers don’t add up.
